No matter where you are in life or what you want to do in a day, there is a Beatles song or record to suit your needs. So I present:
Has your best gal broken things off? Just feeling down in the dumps? Reach out and pick up Beatles For Sale.
Wanna get high? Wanna do something trippy? Go rent Yellow Submarine. Those Blue Meanies will totally fuck with your head.
Wanna get Naked? (Naked deserves two)
Want a good study of the Beatles? Listen to all of the White Album. Oh look, I've already loaded the entire thing on Vox before. Click here to listen to the whole thing.
In addition to this, if you want to pull yourself out of a funk, head straight over to Dear Prudence.
Instructions for listening: Bop along and when you hit 2:50, crank it really loud and and I dare you not to sing out at the top of your lungs.
*Incomplete for sure!
It's damn hard to pick out a Zeppelin song. I thought maybe I'd post all of Houses of the Holy but then I realized I posted The Song Remains the Same last year, which is the first song off of HotH. So instead, I think I'll hit up the next song off of the album, it's fitting anyway. If Rocktober, dog forbid, were to drag on for six more years, I'll get the whole album posted.
Same time last year: Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!
Unlike some sad sacks, I'm sorry Rocktober will be ending in just two more days. So many great songs, so little time.
For those of you who've known me the longest this song will come as no surprise to you. Oh, also, if you've seen me smashed this song may recall a memory of me that is so horrific you just have to laugh.
And if we're playing Santana I have to post a classic as well (edit: I had originally written "throw up a classic" or something along those lines...not exactly what I was going for, although I'm sure I've typed something equally bad in the past).
I was going to save the next one for Saturday, but I like it so much I might just bring it out twice:
No, it's still not time for a Beatles post. I'm talking about Richie Furay today. If you already know who Richie is, congrats. If you don't, here's a quick lesson. Everyone knows a bit of Buffalo Springfield and when you think of them you probably think of Steven Stills and Neil Young, maybe even Jim Messina. But Richie Furay was the one with the quiet and beautiful contributions that even rival the brilliance of Stills' songs. And that voice, oh that voice.
Today's Rocktober selection is a slice delicious Cake. It's time to pull on a pair of Chucks, put your hand in your pocket and nod along.
And this one goes out to all those bratty kids who never paid for their own tickets. Jerks.
I've previously covered Cake and am feeling lazy today, go read the review if you care.
I was wrong. In yesterday's little truffle shuffle podcast I skipped right by Aerosmith thinking I hadn't played them this month yet, but after a bit of digging I found that wasn't true. Oops.
My college roommate had Nine Lives and we listened to it all the time. I still think it's one of Aerosmith's best albums. Honestly, I think Aerosmith has been consistently good despite a brief weak period in the early 80's when drugs got in the way (drugs work well for some bands, but not this one!). It's funny when I think in my mind of Nine Lives being a "newer" album and it's already 12 years old.
And with a band with this kind of longevity it's tough not to pull out an oldie along with the newer one. I think Night in the Ruts is a really underrated album. As far as I'm concerned it's probably my favorite in their catalog.
...or not. I did something a little different for Rocktober 25th. It's the Rocktober Radio Show hosted by Valerae. Listen to me shuffle my collection. Listen to me say "um" and "like" a lot. Listen to my bad grammar. Listen to me say stupid shit that would be awful out of context, like, "The S&M show was really a lot of fun." It's a thrill a minute.
Head on over to Podbean to download and check it out.
Sorry, it was just a few MBs too big to post on Vox. But if you care enough, this way you can at least put it on your mp3 player or listen on your computer without having to keep a Vox page open.
Edit: I just found some embedding code. Let's give this a go:
I cover Sabbath, Cream, Metallica and Audioslave. There's also a bad edit, see if you can spot it. It clocks in at about a half hour. Take it or leave it.
Same time last year: HBO Feature Presentation
No contest.
I always liked what Queen I had heard as a kid and my dad owned A Day at the Races on vinyl but it wasn't until Wayne's World and the infamous Bohemian Rhapsody scene that I went out and bought my first Queen album. In fact, it was one of the CDs I picked out on the day I bought my first cd player. I won't feature B.R. here today because I'd like to avoid whiplash.
Is the a better song for a Saturday?
What can I say, I love Megadeth. It's a blessing and a curse. I find band leader Dave Mustaine equal parts metal god and asshole. As I mentioned in a recent post, Dave's finally graduated to his own beefs page on Wiki (I know I've brought this up more than once in the past, it's just that I've never been a fan of someone quite so controversial!). So while he might be a d-bag, he's also a phenomenal musician - especially live.
Here's an old favorite about the folly of man.
A plan of dignity and balance for all.
Political breakthrough, euphorias high.
More borrowed money, more borrowed time.
Backed in a corner, caught up in the race.
Means to an end ended in disgrace.
Perspective is lost in the spirit of the chase.
Foreclosure of a dream,
Those visions never seen,
Until all is lost,
Personal holocaust.
Foreclosure of a dream.
Barren land that once filled a need,
Are worthless now, dead without a deed.
Slipping away from an iron grip,
Natures scales are forced to tip,
The heartland cries, loss of all pride.
To leave ain't believing, so try and be tried.
Insufficient funds, insanity and suicide.
Now with new hope some will be proud.
This is no hoax, no one pushed out.
Receive a reprieve and be a pioneer.
Break new ground of a new frontier.
New ideas will surely get by.
No deed, or dividend. some may ask why?
Youll find the solution, the answers in the sky.
Rise so high, yet so far to fall.
A plan of dignity and balance for all.
Political breakthrough, euphorias high.
More borrowed money, more borrowed time.
Same time last year: the godfather of grunge, Mr. Soul.
