Heaven and Hell Tour Brings the Metal

Great review. Vinny got the gig by default when Bill Ward backed out. While not horrible, he's not even the best Appice to play drums.

Canada (and a few American cities) got Down for an opener. Had that been the case here, I would have gone for them and Megadeth alone. I've read similar reviews about the way the drum solo killed the pacing and all around vibe of the concert. And while Dio has golden vocals, he can't compare to Ozzy when it comes to showmanship, so where Ozzy could probably reignite the crowd after a lackluster drum solo - Dio really couldn't.

Just my two cents. :)

Tony, I agree completely. I would have loved to see Bill Ward play, but I have the sneaking suspicion he's either not on good terms with Dio or just doesn't care for that era. Ozzy may have had the power to turn the show around, I think too. Dio, while a great singer, doesn't have the presence of Ozzy (who, in turn, is not the best singer, but a legendary performer).

One thing I might add that I really appreciated was that the entire band appeared very sober which is refreshing. I like to be able to understand the lyrics and banter between songs - that's not always possible when altering-substances are present (but I will note that they do contribute to some incredible writing at times).

While I haven't heard any of Down's new stuff (we have no metal station out here), I'd love to have seen Phil and Rex perform.
He was just so casual and at peace on the stage.

As a current hack of a guitarist (no money for lessons right now, and yes, I'm one of those odd classical/folk ducks) well...

I just know that feeling. You're doing what you like, and so things are just cool.

Playing concerts as a guitar student was transcendent for me, especially when my prof and my fellow students were so mellow. I really struggled in that ensemble class, but on stage... it was so different than acting, singing in a choir, or playing for a band. It was like playing for a group of friends. I was glad they came. It wasn't so tense and put-on.
