Geeze Condi, Even the Gunmen Knew
It's been a while since I've posted anything X-filesish. We've just been sailing through the seasons. The show hit it's first peak in season 6. Season 7 was excellent, but it didn't have the big arc or flow of the prior seasons. Season 8 was when we first lost Mulder to those pesky aliens, but he was still around for about a quarter of the season and managed to knock up Scully. John Doggett (Robert "have you seen this boy" Patrick) and Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) have also stepped on board. We have Doggett for the whole season and Monica for a few episodes and I love them both. I'll have to do a separate post that professes my love for the character of John Doggett, but let me just say now that he's the only man that I'd let slide that he uses the word "liberry". :-)
We're breaking before Season 9 to watch The Lone Gunmen. Last night we watched the pilot and it totally blew my mind. Keep in mind that the pilot first aired on March 4, 2001. From Wiki:
In the episode, Beyers and his father are on the plane that was headed right into the trade center. When the pilots regain control at the last minute and veer out of the path of the WTC I was a little surprised at how choked up I was watching it....pilot episode of the series depicts a secret U.S. government agency plotting to crash a Boeing 727 headed for Boston into the World Trade Center via remote control for the purpose of increasing the military defense budget and blaming the attack on foreign "tin-pot dictators" who are "begging to be smart-bombed." This episode was broadcast in Australia on August 30, less than two weeks before the 9/11 attacks.
We didn't finish the commentary last night, but it will be interesting to hear the creators talk about the irony of the situation.

But yeah, Doggett rocks. We've been writing down some of his more memorable quotes. I don't have them on me so this isn't exact, but he's always got these little sayings like, "you've painted me a picture, now put it in a frame". He's just awesome. Very old school.
I haaaaaaaaated Reyes. So much. Loved Doggett, though. He was a damn manly man.
I think it would have been better if Scully had left entirely and let the 2 of them carry on, rather than reminding us of the glory days. Or, optimally, if it had just ended with D&R taking over the files and M&S smooching with the baby.
My personal feeling about the X-Files is that when we think of "how good the X-Files was," we're thinking about seasons 3-7, plus the movie. The first 2 seasons weren't really all that good, I think Fox just kept them on because viewership was being kept afloat with sheer nerd power; the last two seasons were just horrible. The only reason people kept tuning in at all was the prospect that Reyes might somehow take her shirt off. I'm not saying that's right, I'm just that's the way it is.
